What to plant in autumn on the Costa del Sol

Autumn is the best time to plant in a Mediterranean climate. Here are the species, flowers and vegetables that work best in Mijas, Fuengirola and Marbella.

What to plant in autumn on the Costa del Sol

On the Costa del Sol we enjoy a mild Mediterranean climate, with warm autumns and occasional rain. That makes autumn the best time to plant: roots establish before spring without the stress of summer heat.

Why plant in autumn

  • The soil is still warm from summer, but the air is cooler.
  • Autumn rain reduces the need for watering.
  • Plants reach spring already rooted and grow strongly.

Mediterranean trees and shrubs

Ideal for our climate and low-maintenance:

  • Olive and carob (drought-resistant).
  • Oleander, lavender and rosemary (aromatic, long flowering).
  • Bougainvillea for walls and pergolas (colour all year!).
  • Citrus (lemon, orange): autumn is a good time to plant them.

Seasonal flowers

To add colour to the garden or pots through autumn and the mild winter:

  • Pansies and violas.
  • Calendula and chrysanthemums.
  • Cyclamen for shady spots.

Autumn vegetable garden

If you have a small vegetable patch in Mijas or Fuengirola, in autumn you can sow:

  • Lettuce, spinach and chard.
  • Garlic and onions.
  • Broad beans and peas.
  • Carrots and radishes.

Autumn watering tips

Even though it rains more, don’t get complacent:

  1. Water less often but deeply to encourage strong roots.
  2. Use a drip irrigation system with a timer.
  3. Add mulch to retain moisture.
